Al in the MAX phase of the Ti-Al-C system can diffuse rapidly and selectively oxidize during the oxidation process, thereby forming a dense Al2O3 film to prevent further oxidation of the matrix material. The microstructure of the interface between titanium aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC) and the generated Al2O3 makes the materials have the ability to self-heal at high temperature. At high temperatures, cracks or notches on the surface of the material are filled with the oxide, which restores the original properties, especially the mechanical properties. This property is of great significance to maintain the mechanical properties of the material, improve the stability and reliability of the material, and make it more promising to be used in high-temperature environments.
The rapid diffusion and selective oxidation of Al of titanium aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC) at high temperature realize the welding of the material itself and the welding between layers, respectively. The fracture toughness of the layered materials obtained by self-welding of titanium aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC) is greatly improved compared with that of single-phase materials.
